Gender inequality has been a big issue in China for many generations. It has effected nearly every aspect of China's society, from them having less education, less job opportunities, lack of females in politics, and females being aborted because they are not the "dominant" gender. Also, millions of girls have died in China because of discriminatory treatment in healthcare and limited access to food.
One of the most noticeable effects this has had on China is the number of females being aborted and given up for adoption because of the "one child" rule China's government has placed. Chinese families prefer to have boys over girls because men can carry on the family name, and are more likely to take care of there parents in their old age. It is also often to have forced abortions if the parents find they are having a girl.
Another issue facing gender inequality in China is the discrimination in the work place. This effects Chinese competitiveness and economic growth. Women are given less job opportunities then men, and even most women who do work, get paid less then their male colleagues and are given promotions less frequently. Only 9% of CEO's in China are women. Han Jian, Associate Professor of Management said: "The truth is that, even with some equal educational opportunities, not all women have equal upbringing opportunities. Also, He Zhenhong, President of China Entrepreneur Magazine said: "It seems we have different criteria to assess a man and a woman."
Also, an important issue concerning China's gender inequality includes the lack of females in the Chinese government. Of the 2400 individuals in China's national peoples congress, only 23% are women. Also, only 10 out of the 205 members of the central committee of the communist party are women, and only 1 out of 7 members of the Politburu are female. Even though women are predicted to move up in the Chinese Government, as of now, there is an obvious lack of females holding government positions compared to males.
As you can see, gender inequality in China is a big issue. Because of the lack of females, it is not uncommon for females to be abducted and sold as wives. Also in the future, there will not be enough women for the men to marry and have kids with, causing China to face a large decrease in population with the next generations to come.
